In Germany, employees in the public sector have to pay into the VBL (Versorgungsanstalt des Bundes und der Länder). The VBL is a pension fund that invests in non-sustainable companies, e.g. fossil fuel companies. Alison will talk about a previous campaign – sustainVBL – that aimed at making VBL more transparent and divest from fossil fuels. Hiske will talk about a similar campaign in the Netherlands.

TALK: The Climate Crisis and Civil Disobedience
Friday 10th May 2024, 6 pm, Rachel Carson Centre, LMU Munich
Gianluca Grimalda, social scientist with an expertise in climate change, was fired by the The Kiel Institute for the World Economy after refusing to fly home from a research trip in Papua New Guinea. In this talk he is going to discuss his experience with civil disobedience, his trip back to Europe and the role of academics in the climate crisis.
WORKSHOP: What you could do at your own university

Wondering what you could do at your own university or academic institution to push the change towards a livable future in a more equitable society? Join our online meeting on December 17th to meet like minded academics interested in acting upon the climate and biodiversity crisis, and discuss strategies to mobilize colleagues and push for a change.
No previous knowledge nor experience with Scientist Rebellion or activism is required.
In this meeting, we will present Scientist Rebellion Germany with a focus on local dynamics at universities and research institutes all across Germany. We will present existing mobilization materials and discuss strategies, especially how to address academic institutions depending on their individual profile. What kind of talks can be organized, how can the different academic audiences be reached, what can be achieved in a specific academic context?
We will be joined by an active member of SR Netherlands who will talk about how his local group at VU Amsterdam contributed to cutting the ties between the university and the fossil fuel industry.
The last part of the meeting will be dedicated to building local groups – don’t hesitate to bring along colleagues from your own institute; we can help you get organized at a local level.

Am 2. Mai hielt die renommierte Wissenschaftlerin Prof. Dr. Anne Baillot von Scientist Rebellion einen Vortrag über die gesellschaftliche Rolle der Universität in Zeiten der Klimakrise. Die Veranstaltung fand in Zusammenarbeit mit End Fossil Paderborn und Students for Future Paderborn statt. Baillot hat zu universitärem Engagement im 19. Jhdt gearbeitet und auch zu Kulturerbe im Kontext von Digitalisierung und u.a. der Klimakrise. Seit 2017 ist Sie Professorin für Germanistik mit dem Fokus Digital Humanities und Direktorin des Instituts für Germanistik an der Universität in Le Mans.

Alle konventionellen Wege, den Regierungen und der Öffentlichkeit die drohende Katastrophe des Zusammenbruchs des Weltklimas begreiflich zu machen, sind gescheitert. Die Emissionen steigen weiter, Ökosysteme werden weiter zerstört. In diesem Vortrag beschreibt Dr. Nana-Maria Grüning, dass Wissenschaftler:innen deutlich die riesige Lücke zwischen dem Wissen über die Krise und dem politischem Handeln beziehungsweise Nicht-Handeln sehen. Und wenn jemand erkennt, dass es brennt, ist diese Person in der Verantwortung, allen die Gefahr bewusst zu machen, damit sie sich in Sicherheit bringen können. Für uns von Scientist Rebellion sind die Zeiten der ausschließlich neutralen Wissenschaftskommunikation vorbei. Dieses Jahrzehnt ist das wichtigste in der Menschheitsgeschichte. Wann wollen wir uns gegenüber politischer Ignoranz und Korruption aufbäumen wenn nicht jetzt? Klimarevolution oder wir verlieren alles!
TALK (DE): Planetare Gesundheitskrise und ziviler Ungehorsam

Gesundheitsberufe sind dazu verpflichtet, eine Diagnose ehrlich zu kommunizieren, auch wenn sie unangenehm und lebensbedrohlich ist. Die von Menschen ausgelöste Planetary Health Crisis verursacht bereits jetzt großes Leid, das global ungerecht verteilt ist und sich in Zukunft noch drastisch verstärken wird.
Maria-Inti Metzendorf, Medizinische Informationswissenschaftlerin an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, spricht über die gesundheitlichen Auswirkungen der Klima- und ökologischen Krise, und stellt vor warum sie und andere Menschen im Gesundheitswesen sich auch als Aktivisten engagieren.
Lea Bonasera schreibt ihre Doktorarbeit in Politikwissenschaft zu zivilem Ungehorsam. Sie ist Mitinitiatorin der Gruppe “Letzte Generation”, die Hungerstreik und Autobahnblockaden als friedliche Aktionsformen nutzt. Lea begründet, warum ziviler Ungehorsam jetzt so dringend gebraucht wird und wie er effektiv angewendet wird.
